Answer to the Zappos Affiliate Banners Quiz

In last week’s quiz about affiliate banners, I asked which of the following affiliate banners you thought would be best to use.

Zappo’s #1

Zappo’s #2

A majority (53%) of you (as of now) answered #1.

The correct answer was #2.

Banner #2 has an EPC of $180.26, whereas Banner #1 is just shy of the $42.00 mark.

My best guess at the reason for this is that the blue banner shows up better on a white background. To me, it also seems more attractive with both the star graphic and the contrasting color combination of blue and orange.

  1. Carolyn says:

I knew those stars would come into play somewhere:o) So again, the high contrast colors win the day!

  2. Donna says:

    Roslind,
    What does EPC stand for?

    Donna

  3. nice. that was my thinking too. just goes to show how important testing is, because the subjective feeling on this one was split almost down the middle – whereas the subconscious feeling turns out to result in #2 being favored by 81 percent of interrupted browsers, showing that those two ad variations are not close at all, at least where click throughs are concerned.

  4. Jake says:

OMG, I had no idea that such a simple change as palette could swing such giganticly different EPCs.

  5. bw says:

Speaking of ads, how do some websites displaying G**gle ads omit the ad url? The reason I ask is because anyone can highlight the url in the ad and drag it over to a new tab and bypass G**gle altogether. I sometimes do this if I see and interesting ad on my own website. G**gle forbids website owners from clicking on any ads they display.

  6. WOW! What a difference!

But still, $40 is still $40, so I think I’ll use each the banners available, maybe rotating each of them in a single ad or maybe it’s better to have a separate ad for each banner?

What do you suggest doing Rosalind?

  7. Richard Anderson says:

It’s funny, but looking at both banners I’d be put off both by the title ‘Zappos’ but for the purposes of this quiz I’d vote for #2.

For starters #1 tells you to ‘Go’ with the small orange tab, and rather than click, it appears like an instruction to leave! Plus #1 doesn’t give you any reasons to click whereas #2 at least has a modicum of information on it: Surf! Skate! BMX! which gives you more of an idea of what’s to come and therefore whether it’s of interest.
