Google to End Adsense for Video Program

On the ‘Inside Adsense‘ blog, Google writer Arlene Lee states “After reviewing our AdSense video units feature, which allows you to show YouTube content and ads on your pages, we’ve found that it hasn’t had the impact we had hoped for” and that they’ll be terminating the program at the end of April.

Or, in other words, the Adsense for Video program hadn’t made enough money for Google within the year it was running, so it gets the axe. Sounds about right — and I’d add that Google has a lot more patience than I, but they also have a lot more money to play with — mine included :-)

The option to sign up for video units is no longer available to new publishers and if you currently display video units, Google recommends that you start removing the video unit code from your pages ASAP. Earnings from video units in the past will still be credited to your AdSense account until the end of April. At that time, any video units that remain on your sites will direct your visitors to YouTube – for which you won’t get paid.

  1. Thanks for this helpful information, at least it also warned us to get it off to avoid our google adsense account from banned.

  2. Mike says:

This is really sad news, I mean, Google may not make money off of the video units but my site is geared around video units and so I have may a fair amount of money off of them. Sad to see it go :(

  3. Chris says:

Personally, I’m glad to see the back of them – they made page loading times a nightmare.

  4. Steve M says:

Thanks, Rosalind, for the heads up! I didn’t see this coming and it was a surprise. We’ll need to get to work because many of us have implemented this
ad unit on our websites. Chris is right too, they did add to the load time
so I guess that solves that issue now, that’s the bright side.

  5. Paul says:

Another one bites the dust. What else are the google folks conjuring up? Maybe adsense? Naw they will never stop adsense…will they? The number one tip I learned awhile back is this “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket”!

  6. Steve M says:

oh, Fendt Tractor, I don’t think that goolge will banned us if we don’t get all those videos ads down A.S.A.P.
If we don’t clear them, we will just be using up valuable real estate on are sites for nothing.

Sad to see it go, at least it also warned us to get it off to avoid our google adsense account from banned.

  8. Rock Star says:

This is really sad news for people promoting videos on their websites.

  9. Well said Ros. Everyone has to do their due diligence nowadays. If it is your money, it is your responsibility. Sellers have their own roles, affiliates have their own roles, and buyer too. No one is gonna hand you the silver platter; they can however make it easy for you to purchase. In the end, it comes down to our own choice as a consumer, including choice to buy vs not buy, to trust vs not trust that seller/affiliate/product anymore.

  10. I for one am happy about this. Videos are an extremely annoying part of the web unless you are specifically looking to watch something. Though i use some ad sense marketing for my business I still feel like there is a line of tact vs. profit that needs to be upheld.
