Here’s a caution for all those who make global changes to their site’s design in Dreamweaver or Homesite and then upload the whole mess to the server.
I’d been doing just that when I saw one of my blog posts arrive in a Google Alert and just had to click the link.
Ohmigod! Not only did the page not show up, but there was a HUGE error message telling me that something was probably wrong with my wp-config.php file. Yikes!
I then realized that in my haste, instead of uploading just the HTML files, I uploaded all the files for the blog as well, including the WordPress configuration file (wp-config.php) which was not the file for the Sage-Hearts, but the one from Net Profits Today. Oooops!
Not only couldn’t I see the page, but I couldn’t login to the blog’s admin interface.
Fortunately, Steve Hetrick from DataWebPro saved the day and had it all fixed up in no time flat.
Anyway, if you’re doing a big overhaul, make sure that you haven’t been tweaking or moving some of those program files from directory to directory in the meantime, or you might end up breaking something important.
Better yet, upload only the HTML files.

This is just too weird but in a strange way I feel better now..
About 1 hour before I received your “How I Broke My Blog” post in my e-mail.. I too broke my Blog and I got that same WordPress error message when I went to check my Blog address..
I am totally sick over this and I am hoping that BlueHost will be able to fix my broken blog…. I sent them a message so I am patiently waiting..
Here is how I goofed..I did the dumbest thing ever, I actually installed a brand new WordPress blog..by accident..into the same directory as my original Blog..
Dear Blog-Gods please help me just like you helped dear Rosalind..
Peace
Jerry
Another preventative strategy is to make regular backups, and never use those for tweaking and uploading.
Sorry to hear you had a problem. When you use a manila based system like you’ll find at iBlogBarn.com, I doubt you’ll have that worry. #1 Content is kept separate from design layout. #2 “Versioning” allows for an “undo” to your web site not only in stories but in the design templates as well. #3 and of course there is an affiliate program….
