#1 Zappos stands out clearly, bold. #2 looks subtle, low key, kind of blended in. I choose #1.
#1 – stand outs more clear. #2 looks weak even with the stars.
#1 is better (to me) because of the contrast… i think the black outline has something to do with it.
Although I like the color more in banner two, I chose banner 1 because the border and the black font make it stand out more.
#1 caught my eye immediately but once I looked at it, it didn’t seem as credible for some reason and I felt like I could trust #2 more. #2 seems more professional and has my vote!
I agree w/ Les for same reasons, #1.
These ancient eyes have to go with #1 . . . faster read!
Just Plain Bill
I would go with #1. The color makes it look dull and not as sharp to the eye.
Number 1 caught my eye as soon as the page opened.
That’s what a banner is supposed to do – isn’t it?
Can we choose both? I think both of them have good visibility and both have good draw for their own reasons. It might depend on whether you’ll be wrapping content around them or if they stand alone. #1 blends well with the background of the page (to blend with content) but #2 stands out and adds an element of fun! (To stand alone.) I love stars! Arrgghhh! This one is harder to choose!
I would also choose 1
purely as the black catches my eye over the 2 of them.
and 2 seems, as les says above, to lose itself in the background, not certain if the stars would have any effect, I didn’t notice them until I looked closer
Tricky stuff:) My first impression was that #2 jumped out at me more. It may depend on what the background color on the page is, but I’m going with number two just to be different! Sorry Les:)
I was first attracted to #2, but the most important things for this ad is Zappos and Shop Now…both standout better in #1.
I agree with Les. Zappos #1 is the better banner. The color is more vibrant and stands out more and has a more call to action, where Zappos#2 is too washed out and does not call out to the visitor on your website and does not have a call to action. Zappos #2 almost makes me feel that its a winter store and does not give the strength of the merchant.
The Black text against light back round is more attention grabbing in # 1.
I chose #2 because I thought it was more visually appealing. The stars and the white lettering on the multi-colored blue background lent some excitement to the ad. The other ad was somewhat boring.
most web page backgrounds tend to be white and for that reason i think the blue banner is more likely to catch the eye in a banner setting. so i will go with #2 simply for that reason. if this quizz is not about overall coloration i will have learned something important.
I say #2 and I may be wrong but the color(orange) of the shop now action button stands out more against the blue whereas in #1 the Black Zappo’s stands out more than the still orange shop now action button.
Number #1 right away grabbed my attention..
What about EPC history? If you check CJ, Zappo’s is clearly on top.
Zappo’s #2 that is
Hi Ros!
Thanks for bringing my (and Carolyn’s) error rate down to being wrong only 99.99% of the time (based on the last banner test)! lol
This test, I’m choosing #1 again because it’s contrast and clarity seems better to me than #2′s. That said, #2 seems more eye-catching on the white background. I know the “Shop Now” buttons are the same size on both but, due to color schemes, #1′s looks bigger.
Tough test, fun thinker though!

O.K I wasn’t gonna weigh in on this one but I gotta say #2, even if it goes against the majority. It immediately pulled my eye between the two graphics and even if I put my hand over each respectively and judge them against the page, I still prefer #2. The colors on #1 are not congruent and the border totally turns me off. I concede the black does stand out more but overall #2 would get my click first between them, just as I would click first on the “superaffliate” graphic over the “bluehost” graphic on this same post based solely on the way they look to me.
I found that the words ‘Powered by Service’ caught my eye first on banner #2. I thought, ‘That’s nice…’ and proceeded to look elsewhere. The black writing and the ‘Shop Now’ button stand out more on banner #1.
Conclusion – If there was only one banner on the page, I would be more likely to click on banner #1 than number #2.
Realistically – I probably wouldn’t click on either of them unless there was an accompanying article because they don’t tell me what Zappas.com actually do. Shop for what? I don’t think I’m curious enough to find out.
I feel stupid cuz I can’t see the banners…and I don’t know if it’s me or my computer that’s to blame.
“Powered by Service” is more distinct on number two but not enough for me to choose that ad and the busy background seems distracting.
