1. Desktop Computer – As of 2010, I’m running my 4th desktop computer and my 3rd Dell. My computer techno-geek friend Ori is always singing this computer’s praises in regards to its power, speed and superior functionality. That’s what you get when you buy top-of-the-line.
2. LED Monitor – In 2010, I upgraded to a 24″ LED monitor. Anything that saves electricity (and money) is alright by me.
3. Ergonomic Keyboard – I gave up on flat keyboards ages ago when too much time at the computer resulted in carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive stress injury for which I narrowly avoided surgery. Switching to an ergonomic keyboard and taking glucosamine with condroiton has done the trick, i.e. no more wrist or forearm pain – ever. Taking more vacations has probably helped a lot too!
4. Ergonomic Mouse – My mouse is also ergonomic to reduce hand and wrist pain associated with too much computer work. Although I’ve used wireless (infrared) keyboards and mice in the past, both the keyboard and mouse I run now are USB-connected to reduce battery cost and landfill waste.
5. Humanscale Saddle Seat – Another piece of essential ergonomic equipment that makes sitting for long periods less harmful to your health. I bought this chair following my car accident in late August ’07… and I discuss more about the chair here.
6. Battery Backup Power Unit – This little baby has saved my work (and bacon) on more than one occassion during a power outage, something that seems to happen on a fairly regular basis here in the Valley. What I really appreciate is the ability to keep working at my computer for at least 20 minutes after an outage begins (the one linked here says only 13 minutes, but it costs less), which is handy when the writing is ‘flowing’ along nicely. It also guards against power surges, spikes, sags, and brownouts and protects your computer from those no-warning shutdowns that can be quite damaging. For less critical electrical gadgets, I use surge protector power bars.
7. External Hard Drives – I have a few external hard drives… one of which I take on the road with my laptop. It’s great for storing all those huge file-size pictures that I take.
8. Thumb Drives – REALLY convenient storage companion that lets you take all of your data to your home, office, school and anywhere you travel. The only downside is that they are so small that they can be easily misplaced… if you’re me.
9. Sony Vaio Laptop – I take this one on the road with me to conventions and also use it in the home office for video production. While traveling, I protect it with a foam sleeve that I bought from Magellan’s after airport security in Toronto dropped and broke my old laptop.
10. All-in-one Printer, fax, copier and scanner. Although mostly used for faxing and scanning, this is one of the first printers that has actually worked in my office for more than a couple of months. Has pretty speedy output too with 20 pages per minute for black copies and up to 13 ppm color.
11. Corded Telephone – This is a 2-Line integrated telephone with call waiting, caller ID & a speakerphone. It is also hard-wired, as the sound quality on cordless phones is too poor to produce quality webinar recordings.
12. Cell Phone – I use an iPhone when I’m in Canada and an Android when traveling in the States.
13. Digital Voice Recorder & FM Stereo Radio – This Diasonic DDR-3100 digital voice recorder is the one that was used to record Jeremy Palmer’s and my “Black Friday Webinar”.
14. Video Camera – I have a couple of different video cameras, but my all-time favorite is the FLIP. I’ve made a TON of videos with it and uploaded them to YouTube. The Flip is SO small, there’s no excuse not to carry a video camera with you anymore.
15. Digital Camera – The most successful promotions are accomplished when the affiliate establishes credibility with his or her audience and the easiest way to do that is to show a picture of yourself using the product. The DSC-T100 is my 3rd SONY Cyber-shot digital camera and I’m not surprised that it won a CNET Editor’s Choice Award. Ultimately, it is the best digital camera for my purposes with its small, lightweight design and BIG easy-to-view screen. Furthermore, Sony has made serious improvements to getting great shots in low-light situations.
16. Paper Shredder – Essential. Instead of throwing envelopes in the garbage, I use a Royal confetti cut paper shredder to shred all waste materials printed with my name and/or address to protect myself from identity theft.
17. Cork Board – Great for making lists of the things you need to do… and not being able to bury them or turn the page and forget about them.
18. USB Hub – Impossible to plug everything into the computer without this Belkin 7-port USB Hub.
19. Logitech Headset – For Skypeing with my friends… and the occasional affiliate manager.
20. D-Link Router – So I can use my laptop to comment on Oprah’s message boards while watching the show.
21. Digital Coin Sorter – A spur-of-the-moment purchase that proved to be a super time saver. Rather than throw all my spare change in a ziploc bag and spend an afternoon once a year sorting through all those pennies, dimes and loonies; I now throw change in the sorter and it goes straight into the coin wrappers.
22. CD/DVD Wallets – During a recent office cleanup, I filled 5 green garbage bags with those over-sized plastic CD/DVD holders and replaced the clutter with a few of these CD/DVD wallets, each of which has the capacity to hold 208 items. There is a LOT more air to breathe in the office now.
23. Flashlight – Great for poking around in the dark under the desk in search of dust bunnies and additional USB ports.
24. TV – I am not sure why I have a TV in my office as it almost never gets turned on.
25. Candy, “Chipper” the Bear, and my picture wall – Because they make me happy.

Thinking about starting your own affiliate program to promote your products online?

Good for you!

Having your own affiliate program is the best possible way to ramp up site traffic and increase product sales without breaking your marketing budget, as affiliates are paid on a pay-for-performance basis.

But before you rush into affiliate marketing as a merchant, the first things you’ll have to consider is how you want to manage your affiliate program… i.e. use software, a service.. a network?

Listed below are some of the affiliate program management applications and services — and in an effort to save you time, I’ve mentioned only a few of the solutions available — those used by most of my affiliated merchants.

There are basically 4 different types of affiliate management solutions. They are:

1. Custom Software – You can have proprietary software written and hosted on your own server. However, unless your company has very specific needs not served by other solutions, this can be a very costly endeavor. I highly recommend that you look at a number of third party solutions before resorting to this option.
2. Affiliate Network – Affiliate networks are the most expensive, yet feature-rich affiliate management solutions. Some networks charge either a flat monthly fee or a percentage of sales to handle all your affiliate sales transactions and in handle commission payment processing. The biggest benefit to joining most affiliate networks is that thousands of affiliates will be introduced to your offer as soon as your offer is made available on the network. Some networks are trade-specific, such as Credit Soup, which promotes only offers from credit card companies and financial institutions.
3. Remotely-Hosted and Third-Party Software – You can buy an existing script for placement on your own server, or lease a solution that resides on the leasing company’s server.
4. Shopping Cart Integrated – Some shopping carts, like 1ShoppingCart have affiliate program management solutions built right into them.

Understanding the different types of solutions, here are a few more things you’ll want to factor into your decision.

Do You Sell a Digital Product?

If you sell a digital product, like an ebook or software, you should definitely consider Clickbank, which acts as a third party payment processor, (say THAT 3 times fast) and has a built-in affiliate program/network. It is the company I’ve used since 2003 to process sales of my Super Affiliate Handbook. Jim Edwards and I also use their services for Affiliate Business Blueprint sales.

Checks arrive like clockwork every two weeks.

It’s super cheap to set up with Clickbank too. There’s a one-time $50 setup charge, and then a $1.00 fee and 7.5% applied to every order processed. Order fees are split between you and the affiliate who referred the sale.

Best of all, Clickbank has thousands of affiliates in their network who are always looking for digital products to promote…Nothing but nothing sells like information on the ‘net, and Clickbank affiliates know that well!

Sure, Clickbank’s affiliate program has its limitations, not least of which is the inability to contact the affiliates who promote your product. (There are some easy workarounds to that problem, however.)

Nevertheless, it is a ‘best bet’ for getting an affiliate program started quickly, easily and inexpensively.

Do You Sell Hard Goods or a Service?

Merchants who sell hard goods and services have many affiliate program management solution options… and I do mean many.

Do you want to have your program introduced to tens of thousands of affiliates… today? Then consider partnering with Commission Junction, the largest affiliate network.

Although CJ is a costly solution – it will cost thousands to gain access, and an annual maintenance fee of 250 (or more) dollars – having so many affiliates available to promote your product from the outset, may offset the initial and ongoing costs of having CJ administer your program.

Clickbank is another – much cheaper – option, and they now permit the sale of hard goods.If you like the idea of having thousands of affiliates on your ‘doorstep’ by joining an affiliate network, but think CJ’s prices are a too steep, you might want to consider:

• Shareasale
• Pepperjam

Remotely-Hosted and Local Third-Party Solutions

If you’d want to save money and don’t mind finding your own affiliates then a Third-Party affiliate management program solution may be right for you.

1.    Wordtracker is my personal favorite amongst all the keyword research tools available and perhaps the most popular keyword analysis tools being used today. From a massive 340 million keyword database you can learn exactly which terms your target audience are search for and how many times each keyword has been entered.

Once upon a time, I used to work as an air traffic controller.

As you might imagine, rapid technological advancement requires that controllers do a lot of reading to keep up with, and execute, procedural changes in their work.

As such, the first fifteen minutes of every shift was set aside to review new material in the ‘Read and Initial’ file, posted since your last day of work.

In addition to operational changes, the ‘Read and Initial’ contained administrative news on local, regional and national levels.

Some reviews would be easy. I’d read one short memo about an upcoming retirement party and then I’d be off to the coffee pot.

However, there were other days when an hour wouldn’t have been enough time to properly digest everything. But you were stuck with only fifteen minutes.

So, how did I make sure I fully understood all the information before sitting down to work on those ‘information overload’ days?

Well, fortunately for me, I had the best crew partner on the planet.

After quickly skimming the notes, he’d tell me all the nitty gritty details.

In the telling, we’d both learn and understand the changes better.

I often learned more from hearing him explain what he understood, than if I had read the company’s legalese a hundred times.

How to Turn a Messy Datafeed Text File into a Beautiful Website

I’ve been using a variety of affiliate datafeed processing tools and services since I first bought datafeed processing software a number of years ago. I loved how nasty old text datafeeds (either merchant product datafeeds or my own created from Excel / text files) could quickly be turned into pages and pages of content with relatively little effort — or considerably LESS effort than creating static pages one-by-one.

Fortunately, over the last few years, even easier-to-use datafeed processing services have emerged to answer the needs of affiliate marketers. The list below is by no means exhaustive — just a few datafeed integration tools that I’ve used, like and can recommend.

Datafeed Processing Software

WebMerge

WebMerge by Fourth World Media Corporation allows you to publish datafeeds with templates from any HTML editor on any web server, fast.

Shown right is a screenshot of of a short review page for DLGuard created with Webmerge and pumped through my own template. Note the breadcrumbs, categories and |< First | < Previous | Next > | Last >| section, all auto-generated by the Webmerge software.

It took me awhile to figure out the software and the other downside was that I would have to upload ALL the pages in a folder to the site again if I added a product — just so the < Previous | Next > linking would work properly. Not a real big issue, but something to think about.

Datafeed Processing Services

Several services have popped up to help affiliates incorporate merchant datafeeds into their sites including PopShops and GoldenCan.

GoldenCAN

Launched in May 2005, GoldenCAN was the first affiliate product data feed, coupon and search integration service. It remains to this day one of the leaders in providing easy access to product data to the average affiliate.

GoldenCan is a service that makes it easy to incorporate datafeeds, however the downside is that MANY of their merchants are “4th Click” merchants. That means that when you use a 4th click merchant, you share 25% of your traffic with GoldenCAN. For every 4th Click™ generated from a GoldenCAN Integration towards merchant’s web site, GoldenCAN will replace your affiliate site id with its own and subsequently receive affiliate commission should the 4th Click™ convert into a sale/order/lead. The screenshot below shows the output for a travel store I had on my travel blog..

PopShops

PopShops offers up affiliate products from all of the major networks–Commission Junction, LinkShare, ShareASale, and Google Affiliate Network and several smaller ones as well. You can use their service for free to create up to 10 shops using JavaScript. Beyond that, you’ll have to sign up for a paid version to get additional SEO tools, product search within your shops, and the ability to manage multiple affiliate IDs within the same network. Output options range from JavaScript snippets, classic ASP and PHP code, XML, RSS, TypePad or Blogger widget and more. What I’ve noticed with this service is that the graphics are broken about half the time.

Datafeed Processing Solutions by Affiliate Networks

Most of the affiliate networks offer some sort of datafeed processing solutions for their merchants and affiliates. Check out Pepperjam’s Store Builder.

Datafeedr

Datafeedr is a slick solution by Stefan Everaet and Eric Busch for WordPress bloggers who want to easily incorporate merchant product datafeeds into their blogs. The service eliminates the requirement to work with flat files (spreadsheets or txt files) or having to share revenue with 4th click merchants.

When visitors click on individual products, a larger image and description is returned on YOUR site, which is great for your SERPs. Too, alternative products are shown below the larger individual products.

Build A Niche Store (BANS) is a store / website development platform which enables you to create content based sites that generate income through the eBay affiliate programs. BANS supports the development of niche stores for the following 11 eBay marketplaces: Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, India, Italy, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States and has a user base of over 9,000 worldwide.

1. Anti-Virus Software

   Although mentioning anti-virus software may seem superfluous to most who use their computers for business – the point needs to be stressed for PC users who still don’t protect one their most important business assets. You’d be amazed how often I hear from people who have suffered complete data losses due to viruses, etc. I use Trend Micro. To get a 10% discount, to use the coupon code ‘trendsecurity’.

2. Chat Software

   Chatting with your affiliate manager, clients or partners is more personal and gets results faster than exchanging information by email. I use both Skype and Google’s GTalk which is free and offers PC-to-PC voice calls, instant messaging, file transfers and Gmail notifications.

3. Email Software

   My email client of choice is Eudora (paid version 7.1.0.9 as of February 2008) simply for the fact that creating filters is so much easier than in Outlook and I run a ton of filters. However, according to the Qaulcomm website, “The Paid mode commercial versions of Eudora are no longer available. The Sponsored mode versions of Eudora continue to be available for download. An open source version of Eudora® is being developed by Mozilla and will be free of charge.”

   So, if you’re tired of Microsoft’s cranky filters, you might want to check out Mozilla’s Thunderbird, which promises intelligent spam filters, quick message search, and customizable views, has received excellent reviews and is available as a free download.

4. File Transfer Software

   Rather than use my HTML editor or cPanel to manage files and transfer them from my computer to the server, I find it much faster and easier to use FTP (file transfer protocol) software. I use WS_FTP Professional by Ipswitch, Inc which offers excellent security features as well as transfer and configuration settings. Coffee Cup’s Direct FTP client is similar to WS-FTP and is free to try.

5. Text Editor

   I write all of my posts and articles offline – so as not to risk losing my work should my Internet connection go down as has happened to me in the past. I use Ultra-Edit, which is a text editor PLUS. Although I prefer coding with an HTML editor, Ultra-Edit Pro can be used to create HTML code.

6. Web Browser

   Firefox is now my browser of choice. Other browsers include Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, Opera, Google Chrome and Apple’s Safari.

I can hardly believe that I’ve never told you about my all-time favorite software before!
