Thesis Theme for WordPress: An Overview

    Written by Rosalind Gardner

I finally got a chance to play with the Thesis theme which I installed on RosalindGardner.com awhile back. This video is an 8 minute ‘quick overview’ of the backend options. You’ll see that Thesis is an intuitive, newbie-friendly theme for WordPress, with almost everything built right into the package.

Get more information about the Thesis theme for WordPress.

Note: More in-depth videos about working with this theme will be made available soon on Affiliate Blogger PRO.

Have you used Thesis? What do you think of it? Please share your thoughts below.

      I think it sucks.

Right off the bat I saw on RosalindGardner.com that blog has no meta tags for description or (less important) keywords. Neither does this blog.

BTW don’t let some SEO co called expert tell you meta tags are worthless. They are very wrong.

Oh yeah, I would also not use the All in One SEO plugin either. Either get a theme built for SEO or pay someone to fix WordPress for you if you can not code PHP. The fixes are available online, just Google it.

Hey Rosalind! I really LOVE Thesis and it’s even better with the Thesis OpenHook plugin. You gotta try the plugin if you haven’t. It makes using Thesis even easier!

      Hi Chris,

I explained in the video that I hadn’t yet added the meta for the homepage on RosalindGardner.com. It’s there now.

That I didn’t do something, doesn’t make the theme suck.

      Cheers,
      Ros

We’ve been working Thesis for clients over the past year. Hate it…

Other than the menu options and good typography, I can’t see why so many people think it’s so great. Much prefer Frugal theme.

On the other hand shouldn’t complain about Thesis. We’ve made some good income customizing when folks realize that most of the visual appearance still requires skills beyond what many people have or are comfortable with.

      Happy trails,

      Bill

I dont think the theme sucks (and the fact you didnt enter meta tags has no bearing on the actual theme anyways), Chris Lang needs to lay off the coffee i think :) . What gives me a laugh is that Chris Langs ‘landing’ page he’s linked to from here DOESNT HAVE META TAGS either…. thats priceless.

Anyways, I use this theme on a couple of my blogs and they do perfectly fine with it, it all depends on ‘what’ you are using the theme for, not everyone is out there to solely make money and nothing else.

@CNA Training Training, My squeeze page is not meant to rank in the search engines so for that reason it does not NEED meta tags. It is a one page site so it WILL never rank.

I find it priceless that you went to such trouble to find something I did wrong. What a waste of your time. You must not be very busy LOL.

Using a WordPress theme without Meta tags is one of the biggest SEO mistakes ever. And not having meta tags sucks. No way around that one.

So if a theme does not supply you with meta tags I would not use it.

@joe, I have had more problems with that SEO pack banging into other code, I always suggest my clients use well coded, SEO supported WordPress themes.

I hate plugins, Hate Em! I always have problems with them, they slow down the site and I hate Disqus the most and Mashable’s heavy use of it. Scoble’s too.

I spent the last year on the road. Lived out of hotels and ran on WiFi for a year. Try using a Disqus or Facebook Connect enabled site on 2mb WiFi.

Now think about either down the road when you update WordPress or some other plugin does not work with it. Dead in the water you are.

I have scrapped the whole plugin thing altogether. I either code it myself or pay someone to do it for me.

So my point here is, no meta description tags on the domain especially is a terrible mistake for SEO and any listing in Google.

Hence I will use no WordPress theme or recommend one that does not COME with the basic functionality that any site requires.

Now some of you may have the JV guru clout to not care about Google rankings. But many of us don’t have that advantage. So I would take care as to what you recommend to whom before you watch them install a theme that could hurt their Google rankings, and hence some part of their income.

      And loosing income sucks!

      This is a great tool,
and thank you, for the tour it gives a good idea of how you can upgrade as you improuve or have more fun with your site!
      I’m sure you will!
This was a good idea to show how you get it out of the box.

      @chrislang

Your right, i wasn’t busy. I only work about 1hr a day online.

Is being busy a pre-requisite for posting a comment on a blog?? I don’t think so, but i assume your tapping into the whole ‘you need to be working hard all the time to make money’ thing.

I’m sorry i assumed you were trying to rank in google for your site, i just assumed most people do try to, (your landing page does actually rank in google, for some reasonable terms as well, the lack of meta tags however messes up the description).

@CNA Training, you seem to assume to much.

Really, I was simply trying to make a point.

And of course the landing page will rank in Google. Everything ranks in Google somewhere. But it’s a squeeze page site, I just don’t care. But why compare it to a blog? Apples and oranges.

When I say “rank in Google” I mean for something worthwhile. Again you seem to be out to find something I am doing as wrong.

Gotta go, I am working more than an hour a day, about 15 hours a day to be exact. You see Google changes a lot and I LOVE my job. Se Ya!

      Hi Ros!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for this video. It was a lot better than they one they have on the DIY site. The theme is worth having in a theme arsenal. Different blogs require different tools.

      Thank you again,

I think the idea of a video blog is quite excellant.
      Keep up the good work.

I would love to have Thesis. I use another theme which I also like, I’m in their showcase as well. I’ve tried many themes and love the look of these 2 the best hands down. Chris, care to let me have Thesis so I can get in your showcase too?
