Hello Dennis,
You're not actually doubling up on tags when you publish and entry in a category and also tag the entry, that is, if you do it properly.

Tags and categories serve two separate, yet similar, purposes. If you're using a WordPress blog, then adding a post within a category will automatically make it a tag and you won't need to add that particular tag to your entry body, but it will still be picked up by Technorati and other blog search engines.

For a more clear explanation of the difference, I wrote an entry called "<a href="http://www.optiniche.com/blog/143/categories-tagging-wordpress/" rel="nofollow">Categories and Tagging in WordPress</a>" some time ago.

Hi Dennis,

I haven't seen any evidence that doing so might be a detriment.

So it IS good to "double up" on tags? Meaning both the categories, and individual post tags?

I had a hard time grasping the whole Technorati thing until I just signed up and started using it. I've had the Simply Tags plugin on my site for about a week now and have noticed some traffic from Technorati.

I didn't know Technorati also reads your categories for wordpress and others. Great info :)

Another alternative to linking out to Technorati would be to use an internal tagging system so you're building a better internal link structure and Technorati will still pick these up in its index and list your blog.

Ultimate Tag Warrior makes this possible, plus gives you many options when it comes to tagging. However, being a fan of SimpleTags myself, the same can be done on a much smaller scale simply by editing to the source code of the SimpleTags file to point to your search results instead of Technorati.
