Who Will Win the First 5 Memberships?

    Written by Rosalind Gardner

Print Print  Email Email  108 Comments

I was plugging away today at building content for my new membership site (the mulitmedia version of the Super Affiliate Handbook) when I stopped long enough to read an email from Stu McLaren.

The email pointed me to a video about the top 10 membership models created using Wishlist Member — software that you can use on a WordPress blog to turn it into a membership site.

One of the membership models that Stu mentions in the video was one I hadn’t thought of before – but it’s brilliant – and now that’s what I want to do with the site.

Too, some of the models that he talks about in the video you wouldn’t normally consider a “membership site”. However, once you hear how they are setup, you’re going to get a lot of ideas for how you can use it in your business.

Each of the models discussed in the video also includes a real-world
    example of a web site
using these models — along with the URL, so you can check them out first-hand.

Watch the membership model video and check out these sites. Stu also gives you a link to see some how-to videos. If you decide to optin, you’ll also see comments from other people who’ve created similar sites. They’ve even added their own “twist” to the “Top 10″.

Check out the videos for really great blogging / membership site ideas.

Too, the first 5 readers to leave a comment correctly naming the model I’ve chosen, will win a free membership to the new site. :-) (I anticipate it will launch in January).

Comments are now closed and the winners have been announced here.

I would think you would choose the Combo Model – using elements of all the 10 available.

Very interesting video. It is amazing to me how flexible WordPress is for something that is basically free and easy to use.

My guess is that you will adopt method 4. The modular course for your new program.

Very cool! At first I thought it would be micro continuity to deliver your content over a fixed term. Then the modular sounded like a great strategy because you would get people to actually digest your info and apply it. Then I thought the community would be cool.

But then I saw combo and I’m pretty darn sure that’s what you’ll go for. So my guess is Combo.

Thanks for referring me to the membership site video. Very interesting and some great ideas. I am guessing that you would consider either #4 modular course or #10 combo model. I will go with the #10 for your pick as it gives you a little of everything.

Hope I win one of your 5 free memberships to your new multimedia version of Affiliate Handbook!

      Aloha,

Hi Ros, my guess in the combo model. you could use the protected download model with others like the modular course and publisher or ups model. Can’t wait to see your site!
      Best,
      Donna

My guess is the micro continuity model. It was really a toss up between three (and maybe four) – but, I’m gonna stick with micro! ;)

      Hi Ros,

I am thinking you are going to use one of the following models: a private member or a coaching site or a combo model.

      Have a great day!

I have a feeling that you are going for Model #7 Community Center because you like bringing like-minded people together.

Having read your book a number of times I was thinking the modular course no. 4 would suite it well, but on the other hand I envisage you as the community center no. 7 type of person :-)

So I am torn but have decided to go with the Modular course no. 4.

      Good Luck for January

Bet you’re going to use the COMBO! (I can see the Modular Course, the private members area, the coaching site, the protected download principally; and I bet you will integrate the other segments as time goes by.)

      Thanks for the great email.

I am thinking you will use the modular course, model #4. It came out screaming as he presented it. I think this because of the systematic way that you outline your course and your drive to make sure that the members-to-be will succeed.

    26. Barry says:
      Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 19:36 pm

I would think that you would be using the combo model (#10).

It offers the advantage of combining many of the functions you would need to offer content in a “free” area, a paid content area, a method to add graduated course content, etc.

      Hi, Ros –

What a great video! Membership models with lots of potential – I can see you using the Modular Course (which would be awesome!)

      Did I guess right?

    28. Mike says:
      Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 19:37 pm

Ok, could see more than one of these working for what you need for the Super Affiliate Handbook, but I’ll take my best stab at what I think are the top 3 options….

Modular Course – if I had one guess, I would think this is the one you selected. Allows you to chunk out the content of the Handbook and let people pass through the material bit by bit. Also allows you to have more subscribers than the Coaching Site (which is my #2 guess).

Coaching Site – this one sounds like it could work great for you, but it is for smaller # of subscribers and I am not sure if you are looking to go that route and to ‘mentor’ vs. to put together the site and let people go through it at a self-pace (where the Modular Course would be better for that).

Publisher Model – If the 2 above are not it, then I think this would be the 3rd option…although to me this one sounds fairly generic and I would guess you would be more adventurous with one of the above 2 models.

      Mike

How’re you? You know, I’ve always wondered why haven’t you created a video version of your handbook. It’d be the easiest upsell ever. ;)

Good to see that you’re finally creating it.

I never thought of membership sites as being a certain kind of site, but it makes sense, especially if you plan to teach or train. I think you already have a combo sight, but I think you might be interested in a Private Members Area which I think could suit your lifestyle, as now you like to travel. You could sign up members and put in content on a weekly basis for an example. You get paid monthly and you can make your own schedule. Take care,
      Les

      Hi Rosalind,

I think the combo model will suit your membership site.

      As a summary to everyone,

Model 1: Publisher model – providing fresh content on a regular basis
Model 2: UPS model – providing packaged delivery each month
Model 3: Micro community model – Fixed term membership (has an end date)
Model 4: Modular course – providing sequential content delivery by levels i.e. course XYZ 101, XYZ 201, 301, 401, etc.
Model 5: Protected download – users download protected files on a membership site
Model 6: Project management – a collaborative site where members are spread out geographically.
Model 7: Community center – a central place where members communicate on a shared place
Model 8: Private member area – providing resources/materials/communications to a selective group of people
Model 9: Coaching site – a more personalized site where each coaching client gets a specific treatment
Model 10: Combo model – a mix of any of the above membership models, particularly model 1-5

    40. Robby says:
      Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 20:13 pm

I think it will be the combo model because it gives the user the greatest flexibility to take different bits from each model and mold them all into one custom solution.

There are several models that I think you could take bit from, like:
      1.) The Modular Course
      2.) Protected Download
      3.) Coaching site

    41. Andrew says:

Always enjoy your posts Rosalind – this one is no different.

I reckon your http://www.netprofitstoday.com site is a (free member) Publisher Model.

From your description, I think your new multimedia version of the Super Affiliate Handbook site is likely to be technically a (10)Combo Model. My guess is that you’ll use aspects of the (1)Publisher Model, (2)UPS Model, (4)Modular Course Model, (5)Protected Download Model and possibly even (7)Community Centre Model.

Doesn’t sound like your doing (8)Private Members area or (9)Coaching, and I doubt (3)Macro Continuity or (6)Project Management is relevant of your approach.

How’d I do? Best wishes for the new member site.

My guess would be the modular model. The idea of testing comprehension of a subject matter sounds like a good way to make sure people get what’s being taught.

The micro-continuity model is one I’m familiar with. I had purchased Russell Brunson’s Micro-continuity program on the mp3 player. It has a lot of potential also.

Great idea!!! I am excited to hear that you are doing this, and so looking forward to your launch. I’m going to say that you are going to use #4 – The Module Course Model. That is my final answer. Of course I would say that with all the great stuff I’m sure you will come up with, a #10, I also think would be a possible option, protected downloads, ongoing content, etc. But I think I will just stay with #4. Either way, I’m sure it will be a great product. Thanks for all your great content. Dana N.

      Hi Ros,

If I were to take a guess, I’d say model 4: Modular model, where people would be moved sequentially, especially if they passed a test. This could really increase the efficiency of the program and would give people an incentive to buckle down and really understand what they needed to do.

Also, if I understood it right, model 10: Combo model sounds interesting as it would allow you to mix and match from any of the other 9 models.

So those would be my guesses.

      Thanks.

      Hi,

Considering that you are always on the lookout for new and easier ways to do things, I think you will use the #10 Combo Model. That way you’ll be able to incorporate those daily ideas you seem to have.

One question. Are you setting up this new membership site or are you outsourcing it?

      Thanks,

      Sylvia

      Hi Ros!

I am guessing it going to be the combo model. Looking at all of the different services you provide, this could provide the handbook in a modular model, the forum in the community model, and your coaching services in the coaching model. This would also allow the distribution of the handbook with the protected download providing protection from digital theft.

One question though. Will the handbook still be available as an ebook?

      Hi Rosalind,

I purchased your Super Affiliate Handbook last year…great, solid content.

I sure like the idea of a simple means of making a blog into a membership site.

After viewing Stu’s video I suspect you could go with a number of different models but I suspect you’ll go with the “Combo” model.

      Good luck,

      Kief

      Hi Roz,

I’m going to guess that you have chosen to go with
#4 Modular Course for the new membership site.

      Hi Rosalind,

I am guessing you would go for the Modular Model since you will be teaching various things in a progression like in your Super Affiliate Handbook. The software looks very interesting and if I setup a membership site I will check it out. Thanks. Steve

      Hi Ros,

This was a very informative video, but its sound was not working for me :)
So I just went through the video on mute and still gained quite a lot of information.

My Guess is # 3 – Micro Continuity

I think it would make your new site more interesting and profitable than a simple one level membership.

      Thanks,
      Mayank

I would guess the combo model, though I would also guess that more than 5 comments have already been left. Will be interesting to see when it arrives either way,

      Cheers

      Hi there Rosalind

For me it was a toss up between two possiblities

After to-ing and fro-ing decided to choose Module 7

Fingers and toes crossed until Jan 2010

I’m guessing you will use the combo model, #10. The Super Affiliate Handbook would be a natural to use the micro continuation model, but I would expect that you would opt for something ongoing after that, and would probably add the community model.

Thanks for the great info Ros. It was a toss-up but I think you are going to be using the Combo Model.

I will be interested in hearing which one you end up using and why.

Thanks for all of the great info you provide! I am looking forward to this next endeavor.

Very interesting – thanks so much for sharing! My best guess is that you are going to use the Modular Course (along with the Combo model for other membership options). Hope I am right! I’ve been reading your newsletters since the beginning of time I believe.

      Hi Rosalind,

This looks like a really useful and practical product, so thank for passing along the information. I think that you would be inclined to go for the first model to do with content called the Publisher Model.

You are so doing the combo model.
+ publisher for more in depth with your blog and articles
+ protected download because of your ebook
+ community center to pull together super affiliates
+ coaching site – hey, isn’t it time to set up a coaching program :-)

Hey, Ros! Hope I’m not too late, couldn’t access the page earlier this morning. You’re right about Wishlist Member: they’ve got a lot of great ideas. Regarding your choice for your new site, I’d thought the safe route at first would be the “Combo Model”, but since you said a new idea, I was thinking “Modular” (but, Anik’s crew has been doing that for a while), then decided: Your New Site will be done with the “Micro Continuity” Model! If you check out my blog, you’ll see I need all the help I can get. :-)

Thanks for the great information Rosalind! While I’ve known that the membership model is the way to go online, I never knew there were so many different ways to actually do it. I always thought it was just providing “extra” content in addition to what you’re already providing on your site or email list on some kind of password protected page.

Also, the ability to use WordPress makes it very appealing. I’m not an HTML wiz by any means but I do know my way around WP. I think this is especially helpful for people who are bootstrapping (like me) and may not want to pay a designer.

      Very cool.

Thank you again for the great info!

      Hey Ros,
Update, got the video to work from the second page.
This is good stuff. Implamentation into wordpress is outstanding.

In regards to what model you selected, I would have to say Micro continuity.
We have all seen or used most of them with the exception of UPS and Micro.

But thats just a guess, there are many great models.
      Thanks

That was an interesting video Rosalind! It was very interesting to see those different membership model ideas.

I was feeling somewhat confident in my guess until he reached model #10… a mix of all the previous models! That’s what I would pick, with one strong focus… but I’m guessing you’re looking for one of the more specific models.

So I’ll pick #4, the Modular Course. That was a pretty neat concept, especially for a multimedia training program.

Hi Dennis (and everyone else who just got about 99 emails)

UGH, the pain of checking that box to receive follow-up comments
by email when there are a LOT of comments. :-)

The server was SO sluggish yesterday that I just gave up after
it would take nearly a minute to login and load a page. Ergo,
I just approved all those comments now.

Should be announcing the winners in another post shortly.

        Cheers,
        Ros
