Hi guys,
I already have 3 SBI! sites, but it is quite expensive. I am thinking of making a go of this with X-site Pro. I was wondering what would be the best web host to go for? We currently have 5 ideas for websites that we want to go with, we would need a multiple domain hosting service.
I was also wondering if anyone could explain to me what a dedicated server is?
Thanks guys,
Mel |

Gibbo, I would suggest signing up for a reseller hosting account at any of the hosting companies. I use hostgator.com, but I believe 1and1 and others have reseller accounts available.
Basically you pay a monthly amount for so much storage and bandwidth and you can then set up your multiple domains. I have 30+ sites set up this way, plus I host some of the sites for clients I design for. It's the best 35 bucks a month I spend. (actually less cause my clients defray my cost).
A dedicated server is a box at the data center specifically set up to host your website and only your website. It will usually come with root access (meaning you can modify all the web server settings, etc.).
Some market "virtual" dedicated servers, but these are usually a box partitioned and hosting more than one customer with differing installtions of a web server and different IPs.
Unless you have dedicated applications and databases for your business, usually the run of the mill virtual hosting everybody offers is sufficient.

Hi thunderbidz,
Thank you for your quick reply and for explaining things to me.
I am going to look into a reseller hosting account. 35 bucks a month sounds good especially if you already have more than 30 sites up.
One more question if you don't mind... Are these sites small, like a couple of pages each or are they content filled sites? What I want to know is whether I could still put up 30+ sites if they were each around 200+ pages. (Not saying that each one would be this size but just want to get a rough idea.)
Thanks for your help,

The plan I bought allows "unlimited" domains, subdomains and SQL servers. I quote unlimited because the limit really is bandwidth and storage of the sites. The base plan (aluminum) is 5GB storage and 50GB total bandwidth monthly. Mine's the next one up at 7GB disk space and 75GB bandwidth.
I really should get an affiliate link with them. I like hostgator, others may not. I spent 3 years with disappointing outages as a reseller with another company before I switched last year. You really need to Google "hosting reseller plans" and check a few out.
Several of my sites are niche Amazon Associate stores, Several are Wordpress blogs, Some are niche content sites for Adsense. Two run the E-107 content management system. Some are static and some dynamic.
The average static web page is small so three sites shouldn't be a problem. The issue is mainly bandwidth if you expect high traffic, but since you control the total 50GB or 75GB allocation for the month you can change your individual site allocations as traffic changes when you need to during the month.
Anyway I could go on, but my advice is to check out the features available from the sites returned by your Google search and choose one you want to try. PM or email me if you need more help.

Hi thunderbidz,
Thank you very much for your quick replies. It has helped a lot, but now I think the only thing left is to carry out some research and find out which would be best for me.

Hi,
Have a look at www.dathorn.com and Site5.com too - especially Site 5 as they're an excellent host.
Hostgator have served me very well in the past but they've had some big outages lately (on the server I use) and their tech guy was about as much use as a paper liferaft.
Whatever host you go with focus on uptime and then features. Oh and try to get Fantastico as part of your hosting bundle. It's so handy
