Can anyone tell me if there is an advantage to having your domain name as a .com rather than a .net or .biz? Also, what about .org. I always rather expected more from a .org than the norm. Does anyone have any information on the differences?
Thanks, |

I'll field this - I've been involved in the domain market for several years ...
.com is THE most popular extension and has the best public recognition - if someone doesn't quite remember your domain name they'll probably try what they think it is with a ".com" on the end first.
.org is good if your site "fits" - organizations dedicated to providing assistance or information, professional organizations... It can be a "for profit" site, but it should have a "purpose" (besides selling things) to work well with that extension.
.net is OK, but you will lose a percentage of traffic to whoever owns the .com. Works slightly better if the site's a NETwork of something or communications related. Or if it's related to the poker/casino industry, because in the US they advertise their .net landing pages heavily on TV.
Stay away from .biz - it comes across as cheesy and spammy. I'd go with a .info (if it's an informational site) or a ccTLD (.us, etc.) long before .biz. |

Thanks so much for your help . . . but one last question,

What is a ccTLD (.us, etc.)? I assume the .us is an extension but once again is it traditionally of a certain type? And the ccTLD, I don't even have a guess.
Thanks in advance. |

ccTLD stands for country code top level domain. For example .CA for Canada, .UK for the UK, etc. Some small countries turn their TLD's into a way of generating revenue so you'll see domain.cc and domain.tv used by commercial sites that aren't even in that country. While other countries are strict about who can register their ccTLD's.
.US is ccTLD for United States.
I'm assuming if you're posting here it's because you are or are interested in affiliate marketing, if my assumption is correct use .com.
The Super Affiliate Handbook says the same thing...of the "6 things to consider when choosing your domain name" the first one is "Make it a Dot COM". If you decide to use any other type at least make sure you've also registered the .com so when people type that instead of .net, .us, .info or whatever you won't loose the traffic to someone else. |

Thank you very much . . . okay one really last question this time , is there an advantage, if you already own the .com domain to also owning the .net domain and if you do own it should you put an index page or redirect there to move your viewers to the .com page?
Thanks again, |

I register the .net and re-direct it to the .com. I don't worry about the other TLD's. It's also a good SEO practice to register the .com for 5-10 years since the Google and the others put a weight on that. Their algorithms assume that if you register your domain for 10 years you're in it for the long haul and aren't just a fly-by-nighter so it will help your ratings some. |

I'll 2nd that motion.
There have been a number of times I've guessed at a domain name
and I always try the .com first. Then I hit one of those parked paged
with all the ads and grumble as I remember it was supposed to be a .net.
I guess it doesn't matter if you have a-really-long-keyword-stuffed-domain-name.net
because I don't think you'll get much type in traffic.
