Niche research question

Hello all,

I have a question about researching in a new niche. I have a large keyword list set up and I would like to test the waters to see if the topic might pan out. before I spend all the time writing content and building a site around the subject.

Now that the Google Cash method isn't the best option for this, I know that I need to send traffic from my ppc to a landing page first. I have a website but it has nothing to do with this new topic. Should I just use that with a subdomaine or should I purchase a domain name and cheap hosting for the month and do it that way with a domain that is more in line with my new possible site topic?
