Great call last night Smile worth stayin up for (9pmEST was around 2am here in the UK lol)
I've been looking more and more at building a list as part of my current project. I know it's one of the basics you mention in the SAH but the projects I was working on before (all of which fizzled Sad - I was naive, forcasting unrealistic numbers) never really offered themselves to creating a list.

However, this time it occoured to me a few weeks ago how I could implement a monthly newsletter for this niche that people would actually find useful. Then I started hearing about Filsaime's BM thing and looked into it a bit, I re-read the SAH and finally with the call you did last night it hit me - the possibilities of a newsletter with a viral subscription element are mind boggling. Now I'm further along the path than ever before and I cana ctually see a launch in sight Very Happy

Of course, being a poor student I shant be getting an Aweber subscription just yet, but the first £100 I make is spoken for (well, the first £97.90 anyway. The first £2.10 is going on a celebratory pint of Bass!)

Again, great call Ros. Good to hear a Canadian accent again, I'm getting withdrawal symptoms lol
Have fun in Mexico!

Hi Mark,

Thanks... I'm glad you found our call useful even at that ungodly hour.

As always, I found the time way too short to really get into the nitty gritty of things.

The pint of Bass is money well-spent, or will be at any rate. I'll have one for you ASAP. Smile

Hmmm.. is it possible that those other sites you mention didn't go anywhere because you didn't build a list? Can you resurrect them?

And yes, Mexico will be great fun! Smile

Cheers,
Ros

I never actually launched a site from any of the previous ideas I've had. I kept going over research and got disheartened by numbers that weren't really enough to sustain a decent flow of traffic.
That and the realisation of just how naive I was..don't laugh..well, no DO laugh, it's absurd looking back-

One of my first ideas was to go into selling art, framed seascape art in particular. The search figures were pretty low and there was some pretty heavy competitors (art.com, allposters etc.). But, being stupidly optimistic I told myself I could achieve a 15% CTR from some decent organic SEO (again, total novice). As if that wasn't bad enough, I then persuaded myself
that I had a couple of "buywords", I thought "people using this keyword aren't researching, they're looking to buy. If I can get high in the results I can get a conversion of..(wait for it)...40%

It took a mate of mine doing a business degree to point out I was setting my sights a little too high.
I made the same mistake a couple more times before settling on the niche I'm working on now, which involves far more realistc 1-1.5% figures and is still looking quite feasable. Plus, as I mentioned, it lends itself totally to a list.
I suppose the others may have been able to use a list had I followed them through, but it would have been a struggle getting enough content to get a newsletter out, even once a month. Plus I was looking at them through the dollar signs I thought were there, I wouldn't have enjoyed running a site based on any of them.

This time however, I'm enthused 100% and can see a real potential as opposed to...well doing everything wrong basically lol Gods I was so green! lol I'm still low on the learning ladder, don't get me wrong. But I'm glad I'm not looking for those kind of numbers anymore, I'd never get anywhere...

BTW, I'm 21 - 2am is only ungodly if I'm sober and I probably can't argue that I was last night, mates birthday Very Happy

Hi there A Posse Ad Esse!

Would you mind if I made that a Newcastle instead... that's what's in the fridge and it's almost that time! Dr. Phil and a beer... Rolling Eyes

Hey, the best way to learn is through our mistakes. Goodness only knows I've made plenty! Tearing that affiliate check in half by mistake was probably the worst, though. Very Happy

Sounds like you're on the right track. Stick with it, and ask lots of questions.

Cheers,
Ros

LOL! support much appreciated Ros (I'd give credit to you first over anyone if I made it)

HOWEVER...
A Newkie Brown???? (Newcastle Brown). Good Gods gal, have ya not got an off-license that sells some local brews nearby? I was MOST impressed by Canadian ales when I stayed for a month last year. Yes, Canadians may be stereotyped as being labbats producers but, darnit, you can make some good ales (and I'm proud to be counted as a half-Canadian, (crazy mom from B.C.!))! Believe me, a bit of searching and you can do MUCH better than a newkie brown if you appreciate a good beer Smile

Name's Mark btw (Ad Posse Ad Esse is Latin for "from possibility to reality") Smile

also...if the Newkie Brown reference was a nod to the transatlantic readership, also much apreciated...though Bombardier is far superior...as a British Beer;)
