|
|
I started my site as straight blogging at wordpress.
So far it gives me what I need. However, I am unable to upload pictures at the momment.
Do you find Wordpress limiting when designing your site?
I have some questions about switching off of it.
==Learning another tool==
I know a little HTML, and my husband owns Dreamweaver.
I know that dreamweaver will give me full freedom to do whatever I do. But I am on this business as a writer and communicator not to become a web designer. also, I am hesitant of dedicating a few weeks to learn the tool. Any of you out there using dreamweaver, frontpage or similar? Was it tediuos to learn?
==Loosing functionality==
Another concern is regarding the functionality if I switch off from wordpress. Will I have to code my own posting, comments, categories, tags etc?
AHHH!
How about other products like sitesell and Xsitepro, did you have to build from scratch? |

Hi NewMom0208,
Are you using Wordpress on your own domain, or a Wordpress.com site?
If the latter, I suggest you move to using Wordpress on your own domain. You might want to read "Do I Really Need My Own Web Site?"
Once you're set up on your own domain, you should have no problem with uploading pictures.
Simply create a folder called 'images'. Upload your pics to that folder, then use the IMG tab in the Write Post panel and put in the link to the picture, i.e. mydomain.com/images/picture.jpg.
Although the other site builder options you mentioned (Dreamweaver, SiteBuildit and XSitePro) are all really good, learning a whole new system involves a learning curve that takes time and effort... so you're better off to stick with using Wordpress (a fabulous site-building system) and learn to make it work for you.
I hope that helps!

Thank you Rosalind,
I have Wordpress on my own domain but they have an issue with uploading pictures, I found a workaround where I upload the image and then manually add the HTML so it actually shows.
I have your handbook and, because I find myself recommending it often to friends and peers, I will have to affiliate to it
I think you are right; I will stick to Wordpress for now, select a nice template and play with the functionality.
In the future I might learn one of the professional tools so I can do things like polls and quizzes. My husband is handy with Flash too.
To your health! |

My pleasure NewMom0208 and thanks kindly for the recommendations!
You will find that polls are really easy. I use Lester Chan's WP-Polls plugin which has been updated to work with WP 2.5 and is available at:

Best of success!
Cheers,

New Mom - There is some issue with WP 2.5 with image uploading. I experienced it on a newly created site. The fix for me was uploading the "no-flash-uploader" plugin. Everything worked great after that. This plugin disables the flash uploader that was released in 2.5.
You will find the link at the bottom of this page (on the Word Press site).

I hope that helps

I also really debated about going full on with Wordpress on my website but since doing the BlogClassroom I have been totally convinced it was the right way to go for me. No real learning curve for html, dreamweaver, and that stuff. It's simple and the videos that Ros and Anik did are AWESOME... real step by step stuff.
My favorite part is that a blog does not have to look like a blog. It look can absolutely look like a "traditional" website. Who knew?

Nikki,
Awesome site, I am very impressed!
Actually, the blogclassroom site should use its own advise...
I personally hate and distrust those sites were all the content is in one page and you have to scroll down forever. They have like 20 different places to click to buy and the typical fonts, screenshots, etc.
They all look the same. If it wasn't because I trust Rosalind and Anik through their handbook and classroom respectively I wouldn't even consider it.
I actually found Rosalind's handbook via Amazon (nice site they have) then I saw she was associated with Anik and that could only mean good things.
Anyway, thank you so much for sharing, again, I am very impressed with your site, the look and feel, the navigation, the content, everything! Did you learn all that at blogclassroom? |

Hi Nikki,
I'm just surfing around the forum and I stumbled across your blog. Wow! This is exactly what I'm trying to accomplish with my site. It looks as if we have very similar goals . I also just signed up for Anik & Ros's Blog Classroom and I hope that it helps me take things to the next level.
I signed up for your newsletter. I totally understand what you're trying to accomplish. Good luck w/ seemediet.com. It looks great!
Regards,
Doug

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the positive feedback! It's always nice to know when I'm on the right track. LOL Now ... if I could just stay in town long enough to post more often I'd be doing good. But alas, it's 114 degrees in Phoenix so I'm doing my best to stay out of town. LOL

Hi Nikki
That is why I headed back to the Iowa wetlands after only 25 days in Mesa. When I felt my skin shrinking after only being outside 2 minutes, I knew it was time to go.
It is good to know that you are getting help here. If you used GoToMyPC, LogMeIn or even the Remote Assistance built into Windows (I just learned how easy it is), you could leave your home computer running and log in any time from anywhere, even without a laptop. Then you could surf more, and post more here. (hint hint) |

The image uploading in WP 2.5 is a documented (not well lol) Internet Explorer 7 issue. If you use FireFox it is very easy to upload and post an image.
